Inventory Rises While New Construction Tightens: A Q2 2026 Des Moines Housing Update

The question I get more than any other this year is some version of, “So what’s actually going on with the housing market?” Depending on which headlines you follow, you might think it’s slowing to a crawl or that buyers have disappeared altogether. Here in Central Iowa, that’s just not what we’re seeing. The Des Moines market keeps inching toward balance. Buyers have more options than they’ve had in a long time, but demand has held up better than a lot of people expected.
